Drone Awareness Course

This course is ideal for those that have a drone and want to understand more about how to fly it safely, legally and what things to consider before taking off.

The Course

The price of £150 is for one person, reduced rates apply for a second (£90) and third (£60) person taking part in the flying (all prices are PLUS 20% VAT).

Non-flying family members or friends are free to attend; the site can hold a maximum of 5 persons additional to the staff.

We use our DJI Phantom 4 to demonstrate techniques, but the most benefit is gained through flying your own drone on the course, which will be tailored to ensure you learn its specific functions.

We will tailor the course programme to meet your needs following discussion with our instructor. Overall time about 3 hours for one person, up to 5 hours for three persons, depending on battery charging times.

The date/time will be very dependent on the weather as this is the single uncontrollable factor affecting safe drone flying – rain or strong wind cancel all flights.

Depending on how many batteries you are buying, this will affect the overall length of the programme – battery charging is available.

Individual liability insurance is a key requirement for flying at our private site – https://bmfa.org  – joining the British Model Flying Association as a Country member will give you the required level of third party cover.

Syllabus

The Course will be in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1 – Online awareness training – an online video course with multiple choice quiz included to ensure the basic principles are understood prior to any flying. The videos show a chronological sequence of what planning is required before you leave home, how to set up at a flying site and of course how to conduct the flying safely and manage emergencies. This will include Operator’s Responsibilities and Safety – the DRONE code (the law!); how a drone works; and weather considerations that might affect your planned flight.
  • Phase 2 – Pre flight briefing. The pre-flight briefing will be carried out directly ahead of the flying sorties and the subsequent post-flight debrief at one of our training sites.
  • Flying Sorties (3 sorties) and Debriefs. Each flight is battery life dependent – most drones achieve about 20 minutes off a full charge, but sometimes a sortie can be completed more quickly allowing swifter progression onto the next task. We will tailor the course to suit the particular functions of individual drone types, however the content of the sorties is standard across most recreational level drones.

All flights will be fully supervised and be one-on-one training.

We will issue an ASG Drone Awareness Course Certificate of Completion.

Reading

There is no formal reading required for this course but we will pint you towards reading the Drone Code as a minimum and to start reading your own drone User Manual/Instructions.

Venue

Drone Awareness Training will be conducted at one of our training sites or at a location suitable for the Customer. The best location to conduct the course will be discussed with the Customer following initial application.

We will do our best to meet your requirements and convenience whilst providing a safe and legal flying training location.
